Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection and Multiple Bowel Perforations after Liposuction Procedure

Abstract

Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) and multiple bowel perforations following liposuction are rare but severe complications. This case of a 43-year-old female underscores the critical challenges posed by such infections, particularly with extensive wounds and systemic complications, including septic shock and acute renal failure.

Key Treatment and SilverStream’s Role

The patient’s complex care required a multidisciplinary approach, involving ICU specialists, general and plastic surgeons, stoma and wound care nurses, dieticians, and physiotherapists. Central to the wound management was the use of SilverStream Solution, which demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in:

  • Biofilm Reduction: SilverStream effectively reduced bacterial and fungal biofilm, a common obstacle in healing massive infected wounds like those in this case.
  • Safe for Healthy Tissue: Its unique formulation of silver ions in a hypertonic solution worked selectively on biofilm and pathogens without damaging healthy tissue, even in this extensive wound.
  • Enhanced Skin Graft Success: The patient underwent 13 skin graft surgeries, all of which showed successful uptake, attributed in part to the wound bed preparation and post-graft moisturizing with SilverStream.
  • Infection Control: SilverStream’s antimicrobial action supported infection reduction, crucial in managing the septic environment and promoting granulation tissue.

Case Outcome

After five months of hospitalization, including three months in ICU and two months in a general surgery unit, the patient achieved full infection control, granulation tissue coverage, and complete biofilm eradication, resulting in successful wound closure.

Conclusion

This case illustrates the vital role of SilverStream in managing severe infections and extensive wounds, particularly in cases of NSTI with septic complications. Its ability to reduce biofilm, bacteria, and fungi while preserving healthy tissue makes it a standout solution, even in complex scenarios involving massive wounds. The successful skin graft uptake and overall recovery were significantly supported by wound bed preparation and post-graft care with SilverStream. This highlights the necessity of advanced wound care products like SilverStream in multidisciplinary sepsis management and reinforces the importance of performing liposuction in experienced, well-equipped facilities with close postoperative monitoring.
